History of raksha Bandan.. Interesting Story !

mqdefault

Hindu scriptures and mythology is the source of all the Hindu rituals and festivals. In fact, one can find explanations for all the Hindu traditions and customs in the religious epics. Even the origin of Rakhi celebrations is rooted in the Hindu mythology. There is no confirmed date and time available about the history of Rakhi festival, but the stories are many. Started as the ‘different tradition’ of tying the thread to the husband, it has evolved to having the sisters tying the thread to their brother. The different stories related to this festival, which explain the history behind it, go as follows…

In the Vedic period, on a ‘Shravan Poornima’ day (Full Moon Day of the Hindu month of Shravan), the deities and demons were fighting a battle against each other. Unfortunately the demons were in a stronger position, as compared to the deities. The king of the deities, Lord Indra, was very much worried about the result of the battle. His wife Indrani (also known as Shashikala) could not see him worried and prayed to the almighty to help her husband. Indrani was a religious lady, so she prepared a talisman with her religious power and tied it around Indra’s right wrist.

Indrani believed that her talisman will safeguard Indra from the attack of demons. Eventually, she proved right, as that day, the deities won the battle and Lord Indra escaped unhurt. As the talisman had the power of protecting the person who wore it, it came to be known as ‘Raksha Sutra’ and the ceremony of tying it was called ‘Raksha Bandhan’. Since this particular act of tying the talisman took place on ‘Shravan Poornima’ day, it has become a tradition to celebrate ‘Raksha Bandhan’ on the ‘Shravan Poornima’ day every year. With time, the festival came to comprise of brother-sister duo, rather than husband-wife.

history-of-rakhi

It is said that when Alexander invaded India in 326 B.C., his wife tied a Rakhi to the king Porus and in return, Porus promised to protect her and her husband. We also have various such examples of tying knots or threads, especially in the history of Rajputana. The most famous of them is the story of the Queen Karnavati of Chittor, who sent a Rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun, to save her kingdom from the invasion of Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. That particular day of Purnima was celebrated as Raksha Bandhan first in Marwar and then, all over Rajasthan. Finally, it came to celebrated all over India.

Happy Vara Lakhmi Vratam. ( JFC Food Consulting LLP)

maxresdefault

The Hindu festival going by the name ‘Vara Lakshmi Vratha’ is celebrated on the Friday before the full moon in the Tamil Month ‘Aadi’ which corresponds to the English months of July-August. It is a festival to propitiate the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu, one of the Hindu Trinity. Varalakshmi is one who grants boons (Varam). The VaraLakshmi Vratam Festival in the year 2015 falls on August 28.

The winding steps takes one to the different shrines of Lakshmi one after the other. It is said that Lakshmi will enter the house of anyone who thinks of her and bless them. There are many festivals in the year dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Among them, Varalakshmi Vratham is considered very auspicious because it is marked by strict observance of certain practices and austerities. It is also called Varalakshmi Nonbu.

Lakshmi-devi

The name Vishnu really means pervading everywhere, and Lakshmi, his consort, is symbolical of the forces found everywhere. Eight forces or energies are recognised and they are known as Sri (Wealth), Bhu (Earth), Sarasvati (Learning), Priti (Love), Kirti (Fame), Santi (Peace), Tushti (Pleasure) and Pushti (Strength). Each one of these forces is called a Lakshmi and all the eight forces are called the Ashta Lakshmis or the eight Lakshmis of the Hindus. As health, wealth and prosperity depend upon the rythmic play of these forces, the worship of Lakshmi is said to be to obtain these three. Hence this festival is observed, invoking the blessings of Lakshmi.

JFC Food Consulting LLP Wishes all  family Members,Friends & Blog readers to celebrate the VaraLakshmi Vratam Festival with full of devotion & attain the boon and Blessings from the Goddess VaraLakshmi.

The Best Foods To Eat at Everytime

 follow-a-pattern

Keeping track of what you’re supposed to eat to stay healthy can already be overwhelming, but it turns out that when you eat what can also be important for keeping your weight in control and for warding off chronic disease.

It turns out Mom was right: you should eat breakfast. And if you don’t believe Mom, a growing body of studies shows that a good meal in the morning can help your body prepare for the day to come, and lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. But what about the rest of the day’s meals? Here’s what nutrition experts say about the best times to eat and why.

Morning
Don’t skip breakfast. Reporting in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, Harvard School of Public Health researchers studied the health outcomes of 26,902 male health professionals ages 45 to 82 over a 16-year period. They discovered that the men who skipped breakfast had a 27% higher risk of heart attack or death from heart disease than those who honored the morning meal. According to the scientists, skipping breakfast may make you hungrier and more likely to eat larger meals, which leads to a surge in blood sugar. Such spikes can pave the way for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, all risk factors that can snowball into a heart attack.

Pass on the pastry. Eating in the morning — and what you eat — is important for setting your blood-sugar pattern for the rest of the day. “If you eat something that is whole grain and has some fat and protein to it, your blood sugar is going to rise slowly and go down slowly. If you eat something refined, like an overly sweet cinnamon roll, that’s the worst thing you can eat,” says Judy Caplan, a registered dietitian nutritionist for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “You get an insulin [spike], and [then] your blood sugar drops too low so you get hungry again. That’s why people get into a cycle of overeating junk.”

To ease your body into a more consistent blood-sugar pattern, try some oatmeal, whole-wheat toast with almond butter, or an omelette with spinach and avocado. Caplan’s favorite breakfast is a baked sweet potato with a little bit of cinnamon and a small bit of butter. Who says you have to eat just cereal in the morning?

Afternoon
Fuel up at the right time. In the 1960s, nutritionist Adelle Davis popularized the mantra “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” Why? Fueling up makes sense earlier in the day, when your body needs the most calories for energy. That’s why in many European countries, the largest meal of the day occurs in the afternoon. “Ideally, you want to give yourself fuel before you do harder labor,” says Caplan.

If you’re used to eating a smaller meal for lunch and a larger meal later, you can still fill up with a hearty meal that has significantly fewer calories. “A fairly large meal [that] is full of salad and vegetables [is] big in volume but light in calories,” says Caplan.

burger

Evening
Don’t overdo it. Calories get burned up no matter when you eat them, so theoretically it’s O.K. to eat after dark. But if you eat a heavy dinner, you’re not as likely to get rid of those calories before you turn in. “What you don’t burn off is more likely to be stored as fat, as you become less active toward the end of the day,” says Tracy Lockwood, a registered dietitian at F-Factor Nutrition. “Eating too close to bedtime increases your blood sugar and insulin, which causes you to have a hard time falling asleep. Therefore, your last meal should be the lightest of the day and should be eaten at least three hours before you go to sleep.”

Time to eat
Time to eat

There’s another reason that late-night eating, after dinner, isn’t a good idea. In most cases, those visits to the fridge involve sweet treats such as ice cream and other desserts that can send blood sugar soaring right before bed. That can lower levels of the hormone melatonin, which is supposed to help you feel tired and relaxed, so waning levels can make it harder to fall asleep. “A boost of energy coming from your dinner, which may have consisted of pasta, rice or bread, can act as a short-lived stimulant, causing you to feel more awake immediately after a meal,” says Lockwood. “Also, it is not recommended to lie down immediately after a meal, especially a big one, since it increases your chance for acid reflux.”

Keep it light. “If you go to Europe and places where there is not as much obesity as the rest of the world,  people eat very late and they’re not necessarily overweight. That’s because they are walking everywhere and they are typically not eating a huge and heavy meal,” says Caplan. “Instead, it may be avocado and toast with a side of soup.”

tired-man-drinking-morning-coffee

First off, if anger is a part of your world consider meditation. Meditation allows you to view your emotions and listen to them without reacting. This way when you get mad you’re less likely to blow your lid and more likely to think about the things you say and do before you do them. If you’re already susceptible to anger certain foods can make matters worse.

Keep reading to learn about 4 foods worth avoiding.

  1. Coffee

292082-coffee-2

Coffee can make us cranky. When I drink too much coffee it tends to make me jumpy and quicker to open my mouth. Do you have something worth saying or will it just hurt someone else’s feelings? Could you frame your argument more compassionately? Coffee gives us a high with so much energy sometimes we don’t know where to put it. Stay balanced by switching to green tea or yerba mate. Both supply a boost while keeping you calm and collected.

2. Tomatoes

tomato

The ancient science of Ayurveda says that tomatoes are a heating food, which can cause anger. If you’re prone to reacting in anger, you’re likely at least partially a pitta dosha, the element made of fire. A little fire is good, it leads to better digestion. But too much fire leads to anger and the side effects of anger like stress and the resulting guilt.

3. Spicy Peppers

images

Spicy peppers again heat the body up and if you’re already heated, you don’t need anything else to help fuel the flame. Pitta dosha is aggravated during the summer time. Restore and maintain balance by avoiding this heating food when it’s already hot outside.

4. Wheat and Milk Products

Eggs, bread and dairy products
Wheat and Milk products

The main allergic response to wheat and casein in milk products can be brain inflammation, which causes hostility according to BeWellBuzz. Casein, which is found in dairy and gluten in wheat, has been linked to aggression.

Try to avoid or Reduce the intake of  above mentioned food.

The Foods Which Make You Less Hungry

#1 Cinnamon

cinnamon

Next time you have cereal, oatmeal, fruit, or even coffee, sprinkle some cinnamon on it. This zesty spice, like other ones like cloves and ginger, helps lower blood sugar levels, which helps to control your appetite. Cinnamon flavoured chewing gums are available in the market, you can give a try.

#2 Wasabi(Japanese horse radish)

wasabi

This spicy little something suppresses appetite and reduces inflammation (that’s bloating!). No wonder why you feel full after eating sushi!

#3 Virgin Bloody Marys

bloody

Need something to make your morning a little brighter? Look no further than everyone’s favorite hangover antidote. Hot sauce reduces hunger and calorie intake, and horseradish suppresses appetite and increase digestion.

#4 Grape seed Oil

grape seed oil

Have two teaspoons of this “good fat” two hours before lunch. It will slow down gastric functions, helping you to stay fuller longer.

#5 Pasta – Yep, Pasta

pasta

These are no ordinary noodles. They’re made of a soluble fiber found in the konjac root, called glucomannan. This miracle food literally “soaks up your hunger.” While it reduces the amount of carbs your digestive tract absorbs, it also combats constipation, diabetes, and cravings. Use it in powders, supplements, and noodles.

#6 Pine Nuts   dheevadhaaru (దేవదారు)

oine nut

These little packages contain big benefits – namely, the ingredient pinolenic acid, which stimulates the hormones that make your brain think, “I’m full!” Have a shot-glass full of these to combat hunger and increase protein intake.

#7 Umeboshi Plums   రేగుపండు

regu pandu

These are simply plums that are pickled to be extra sour – a great shock to that stubborn sweet tooth. You can find them at a specialty or health food store, or Asian supermarket.

GRILLED TANDOORI CHICKEN / TOFU SKEWERS WITH CUCUMBER MINT RAITA

 Picture9

Here’s a recipe we’ve been serving up lately both in catering and at home. It bridges the gap between summer and fall, with aromatic, earthy spices, and can still be made on the grill, before you pack it up for winter.   It’s a fast easy dinner, that is made with tofu or chicken (or both like we have here).

Picture4

If you are up for it, it’s really fun to make your own tandoori spice blend. But this is not a necessity- store bought works just fine too. For even better flavor (and more tender chicken), marinate the chicken or tofu the night before, giving it a full 24 hours to soak up all the goodness. But, once again, if pressed for time, a quick 30 minute marinade will also work.

Picture6 Picture7

Making your own spice blend comes together quickly, making your kitchen smell delicious. I found this Tandoori Spice recipe some time ago now, and have stuck with it ever since. It makes about 3/4 of a cup which you can save for a later use. The more whole seeds you use, the deeper the flavors, but substituting ground spices will work too.

Traditionally, dried kashmiri chillies, a mild red chile, originating from India are used in the recipe. But they can be difficult to find. These deeply red, wrinkled chillies are known not only for the stunning vibrant color they impart to spice blends and curries, they are highly regarded for their flavor.  I substitute a 2-3 chiles de arbol and add sweet paprika (not smoked) to enhance the color, without adding too much heat.

Picture5

Whole seeds like cumin, coriander, cardamon pods, cloves, fenugreek, and cinnamon bark are toasted in a skillet  along with a mild red chilies, until aromatic.  Blend them in a blender or coffee grinder until finely ground.  The rest of the ground spices are added and you end up with a very fragrant delicious blend.

For the marinade, add a few tablespoons of Tandoori Spice to plain whole milk yogurt, along with salt, olive oil and lemon juice, and you are pretty much done. Sometimes I’ll add fresh garlic and ginger for added punch.

Picture6

Marinate the tofu or chicken for 30 minutes – or preferably or overnight. I will tell you, the longer you marinate, the better the flavor. So I’ll either marinate overnight or first thing in the morning.

The Cucumber Raita with Mint and Cilantro comes together especially fast. Usually I just make this while the grill is pre-heating.

Picture3

If you don’t feel like starting up your barbecue, a grill pan over your stove top works great. Make sure to grease your grill or grill pan well. Grill each side so all sides are nicely marked, and finish in a warm oven.

Picture1 Picture2

So many families these days have a vegetarian or vegan mixed in with the meat-eaters. Or a meat-eater mixed in with the vegetarians. This recipe easily accommodates that. Often, I will make both chicken and tofu for us….they have the same preparation, its just a matter of dividing the marinade.

Is it Good to Eat Breakfast in the Morning?

Eating breakfast boosts concentration and helps your overall health.

Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, and with good reason. Like gasoline in your car, breakfast provides the fuel you need to take on the challenges of your day. Breakfast powers up your body and your brain and reduces the risk of weight gain. Even a quick breakfast is better than nothing.

concentration

Concentration

Studies show eating breakfast improves attention and academic achievement. In one study of school children published in the journal “Indian Pediatrics” in October 2008, those who ate breakfast every day had better concentration, attention, memory and academic achievement than those who skipped breakfast. Hard-boiled eggs can be a smart breakfast choice. Besides being quick and easy, eggs contain choline, a nutrient that may benefit your brain. Higher intakes of choline were found to be related to better cognitive performance in a study published in the December 2011 issue of “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.”

weight

Weight Control

Breakfast helps you maintain a healthy weight by reducing hunger later in the day. Skipping meals has been shown to lead to overeating at snack time or lunchtime as hunger gets the best of you. Additionally, the prolonged fast that occurs when you skip your morning meal can increase your insulin response, causing fat storage and weight gain, according to the Mayo Clinic. In fact, skipping breakfast increases the risk of obesity, the clinic reports.

overall

Overall Health

Starting your day with a nutritious, healthy meal lays the foundation for healthy habits. People who eat breakfast tend to consume less fat and cholesterol because they’re less likely to pig out on junk food due to hunger, according to Connie Diekman, a registered dietitian in St. Louis and former president of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Eating a nutritious breakfast also gives you more energy, Diekman says. Skipping breakfast is associated with decreased physical activity, according to Mayo Clinic. When you have the energy to be active, you’re more likely to be fit and healthy, says Diekman.

tips

Tips

Breakfast can be any nutritious food. A bowl of soup, a sandwich or leftovers from last night’s dinner can work as breakfast, notes the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For a more traditional quick breakfast, stock your kitchen with ready-to-eat cereal, hard-boiled eggs, small bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit. If you’re a breakfast skipper because you’re not hungry in the morning, Diekman suggests having a glass of 100 percent juice and a piece of whole-wheat toast before dashing out the door and a nutritious mid-morning snack within a few hours.
